The wake-up call
Today we have taken the steps to build a stronger voice and unity for houndsmen and women. The starting point of the BC Houndsmen Society was the day that the ministry decided to try and take away the use of hounds for hunting black bear during the month of June across the province. This was a wake-up call. In region 4, stake-holders, resident hunters, EKTHA directors and members were able to come together and in region 7, the president and secretary of the EKTHA and two people that are co founders of the BCHS put their concerns on the table with the Ministry. In return, the ministry retracted the proposed change and both sides agreed to work on resolving the current issue.
The Path.
With this proposed regulation change it woke people up. Situations, both political and non, are not being brought to light for us as houndsmen and women across the province, and its alarming to be so segregated. In response, we formed the BC Houndsmen Society, which has directors across our province; To be in the field listening to fellow houndsmens’ ideas and also their concerns.
To Work with, not only fellow houndsmen and women, but to also reach out and create a positive relationship with our wildlife managers and Conservation officers. We want to discuss what matters to us and identify what is needed on both sides to maintain our heritage and rights of owning, training and hunting with our hounds.
Footsteps down the path.
As the BC Houndsmen Society grows, we will be standing together united with our membership and in order to do this we will be committed to:
Providing current information regarding what political matters are out there that could impact us as houndsmen through our newsletter, social media, web page and membership meetings in all the different regions
Hosting events to help educate fellow new Houndsmen on training, nutrition, lodging for our hounds and how to be a proper ambassador for our amazing lifestyle.
Working with houndsmen and women who have been in this lifestyle for many years and learning from them, and in kind relaying the education and information to honor their dedication to the sport.
Put boots to the ground and lead by example by helping create science driven data for predators and prey, and to help further understand the need to be a positive resource in the task of wildlife management.
We thank you for your interest, and hope to see you creating footsteps with us in our journey and share in the passions we all carry towards our lifestyle with our hounds.
Sincerely the executive and board of directors
